Gateway Expressway, Segment 1, Design-Build
The $585 million Gateway Expressway Design-Build project is the most significant transportation project in Pinellas County, FL since the expansion of US 19. This project is a critical part of the Tampa Bay Area’s growing transportation network as it will provide much needed limited and controlled access connections from CR 611 on the north side, US 19 on the west side, and the St. Pete/Clearwater International Airport to I-275.
The project included the first section of Tampa Bay’s Next Network by constructing the initial segment of the Express Lanes on I-275. Overall project improvements included upgraded interchanges and grade separations with new ramps, bridges, and flyovers; enhancements to arterial surface roads; various intersection renovations; and utility improvements. KCA provided MOT, roadway and structures design, drainage, and signing and pavement markings (S&PM) services for this fast-paced expansive project. A safety and crash analysis was performed along with a conceptual ramp design and a Pond Siting Report. After the District received approval of the Interchange Operational Analysis Report (IOAR), KCA completed final design including a new two-lane exit ramp, ramp lighting, drainage improvements, and signal modifications.
