KCA is proud to receive a 2026 ACEC Florida Engineering Excellence Award for our work on the Central Florida Expressway (CFX) SR 429 Widening & Systemwide Flex Lanes Project.
The project included 3 miles of SR 429 widening and the comprehensive analysis, planning, and design of a 35-mile Part-time Shoulder Use (PTSU) system on both SR 429 and SR 417. This system (branded as Flex Lanes by CFX) incorporates an array of sensors, cameras, lane control signals, and dynamic message and speed limit signs and specialized software. This technology is managed by CFX and Regional Traffic Management Center operators and allows the dynamic opening and closing of the travel lanes and the inside shoulder to shift traffic around incidents and increase capacity when warranted.
The Flex Lane System represents a first-of-its-kind technology application in the Southeastern United States. It delivers improved travel time reliability, safer incident management, and enhanced operational flexibility. These forward-thinking traffic management strategies position CFX as a leader in innovative expressway management.
